Project Zanzibar

I'll now try to write a summary of each day of the project week. I will upload some well-selected pictures (We have over 4000 pictures.) and link to our YouTube account where some edited movie-clips will be uploaded. The clips aren't 100% finished but they have been shortened very much as to avoid being tedious. I would also like to apologize for amateur filming and due to lack of electricity on Zanzibar for dark pictures/movies. Zanzibar was without electricity for at least 3 months, and only the richer companies and people had power-generators running on petrol to get electricity during certain hours. Because of the lack of power, I had no chance to upload any pictures/movies during the week, neither could I transfer any movies from the memory cards to my harddrive, which forced me to be sparing with the few hours I had on the memory cards. I managed to get over 300 small clips, that I've been looking through and edited into the small movies you can see on our YouTube.

Project Plan

Purpose and vision

The aim of the project is to inform the inhabitants in general and specifically the youths about waste sorting for a brighter future. Through physical meetings and cultural exchanges can we understand their situation on a higher level and thereby making it easier to inform and help Zanzibar's citizens. The goal is to evoke attention through different activities within as well environment- and culture-area. Hopefully the inhabitants realizes the importance of taking care of your waste and especially hazardous waste, and consequently taking better care of their world heritage town.

Background

Tanzania, Zanzibar is a small group of islands located on the east coast of Tanzania. The inhabitants don't have a waste sorting system, therefore litter, garbage and hazardous waste as batteries, are thrown everywhere.

For 5 years have students from Christopher Polhemgymnasiet on Gotland visited the world heritage city Stone Town on Zanzibar to teach and inform the inhabitants about waste sorting, and thus improving their environmentally awareness. The goal of the projects have been to increase the native inhabitants interest for keeping and protecting their world heritage city, which has similarities with Gotlands own world heritage city Visby.

Three days to go.

Now the time is approaching. Soon we are off to carry out our project for informing about waste sorting systems in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

This blog will be your window into our trip and we'll try to update it as often as we can during this incredible adventure with comments, pictures and movies.
